A Deeper Look
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often misunderstood. While many people associate OCD with excessive cleaning or organization, it is a complex anxiety-related condition that can affect nearly every aspect of daily life. OCD is characterized by unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, urges, or doubts (obsessions) that create significant anxiety, along with repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) performed in an attempt to reduce that distress. OCD can take many forms. Some individuals experience fears of contamination or illness, while others struggle with intrusive thoughts involving harm, relationships, religion, sexuality, morality, perfectionism, or uncertainty. Many compulsions are invisible to others and may include excessive reassurance-seeking, mental reviewing, rumination, checking memories, analyzing thoughts, or trying to achieve complete certainty before making decisions. These experiences can feel frightening, confusing, and isolating but they are far more common than many people realize. One of the most difficult aspects of OCD is that it often attacks the things we value most. It may leave you questioning your character, your relationships, your decisions, or your identity. Many people with OCD know their fears are irrational or exaggerated, yet still feel trapped in an exhausting cycle of doubt and compulsive behaviors. This cycle can consume hours each day and interfere with work, school, relationships, and overall quality of life. My approach to treating OCD is compassionate, collaborative, and evidence-based. I understand that OCD is not simply about "thinking positively" or "stopping the thoughts." Instead, treatment focuses on changing your relationship with uncertainty and helping you break free from the compulsive behaviors that keep OCD alive. Drawing from Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold standard treatment for OCD, along with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and compassion-focused interventions, we will work together to gradually reduce OCD's hold on your life. Treatment is always individualized and moves at a pace that feels both supportive and appropriately challenging.
